The questions owners actually ask
Straight answers on cost, contracts, switching and support — including the honest not-fits. Anything we can't answer plainly here, we'll answer plainly in your review.
Cost & contract
What does the Shift4 POS system actually cost?
Shift4's current UK offer prices Shift4 Dine — the full EPOS package with till, payments, loyalty, table management, reservations and reporting included — at £39 a month, with no upfront hardware cost and no minimum monthly service charge to hit. Card processing rates are set for your business rather than published as a headline, which is exactly what the free review puts side by side with your current bill. We confirm every figure in writing before you sign anything.
What's NOT on the bill?
This is where many providers make their real money, so it's worth spelling out. Shift4's UK offer has no PCI compliance fee (and no annoying annual questionnaire), no minimum monthly service charge, no authorisation fees, and no admin or support charges. Integrations with third-party tools carry no Shift4 charge either. The small fees that do exist are honest and flat — for example a 50p refund fee and a £5 chargeback fee plus the card scheme's passthrough cost — and we'll walk through all of them in your review.
Am I locked into a long contract?
The standard UK agreements are 12 months for Shift4 Dine (the full POS) and 18 months for Shift4 One (the standalone terminal). Per Shift4's UK offer there are no termination or cancellation fees — if you close your business, you are not chased for exit charges. We confirm the exact terms for your agreement, in writing, as part of the review.
What happens to the hardware costs if a device breaks?
Device replacements are free for the life of the service — that is part of the Shift4 offer rather than an insurance add-on. Combined with no upfront hardware investment, the kit that runs your service never becomes a capital expense.
Money & payments
How quickly do I get my money?
Settlement is next working day (T+1), Monday to Friday, with funds typically received by 4pm. Batching happens automatically at midnight, so there is no end-of-day ritual to remember.
Which cards can I accept?
Visa, Mastercard and American Express — with contactless, chip & PIN, and mobile wallets. Pay-by-link and QR code payments are also available. If a meaningful slice of your trade relies on other card schemes, tell us in the review and we will be straight about the gap.
Can I get business funding through this?
Some payment providers may offer working capital or cash advance options to eligible merchants — Shift4 offers merchant cash advance in this way, applied for directly with them. EHNT does not provide funding advice; any funding offer, eligibility assessment and agreement would be handled directly by the relevant provider. If cash flow for a refit or expansion is part of your thinking, mention it in the review and we will flag whether provider-led options may be available.
Switching & setup
How long does switching take — and will I lose trading time?
Shift4 One (standalone terminal) typically takes about a week end to end. Shift4 Dine takes around two weeks, most of which is Shift4 programming your menus properly before anything arrives. Hardware ships tracked on a 24-hour service, and installation is done by an installer, by us, or guided remotely — your current setup keeps trading until the new one is live, so there is no gap.
Who trains my staff and helps after go-live?
Shift4 Dine merchants get a pre-launch specialist to shape the system around how you trade, and a post-launch specialist for around 30 days after install for training, tweaks and things like loyalty setup. After that, support is 24/7 by phone, email or live chat — one number for everything, including a chargeback defence team that deals with Visa, Mastercard and the customer's bank on your behalf. And EHNT stays local and reachable throughout.
Is my business the right fit?
Hospitality — cafés, restaurants, bars, pubs, takeaways, delis — is the sweet spot, because that's where loyalty, table management, reservations and kitchen routing earn their keep. For businesses that just need excellent payment acceptance — boutiques, car dealerships, pharmacies, salons and most of the high street — Shift4 One fits without the POS. And two honest not-fits: retail with tens of thousands of SKUs needing deep stock control, and online-only businesses (Shift4 UK doesn't currently offer a pure e-commerce gateway). If you're in those camps, we'll tell you and save you the meeting.
Do self-service kiosks exist in the UK?
Yes — Shift4 self-service kiosks are available in the UK now. One of the venues on this site was among the first UK businesses to pilot self-ordering, and you can hear the owner talk about it in the video on our homepage. If reducing queue pressure is your goal, ask about kiosks in the review.
Working with EHNT
Who am I actually signing with — EHNT or Shift4?
Your agreement for payments and POS is made directly with Shift4. EHNT Ltd is an independent UK company and a Shift4 partner: we review your setup, give you a straight recommendation, handle the introduction, and stay involved locally through setup and go-live. We are paid by Shift4 as a partner when a business we introduce goes live — not by adding margin to your rates.
I'm not in hospitality — is the review still for me?
Yes. Hospitality is the specialism, but the review itself is about fit. If the right answer is not a full POS setup, we'll say so. Some businesses simply need low-cost card acceptance, payment links, ecommerce checkout, or a simpler provider. The goal is to recommend the setup that fits the way you actually trade — and where a selected partner other than Shift4 is the better fit, we'd ask your permission before sharing your details with anyone.
What if the review shows my current setup is fine?
Then that's what we tell you, in writing if you like. A review that always ends in 'switch' isn't a review — it's a pitch. We'd rather you remember us as the people who gave you a straight answer and come back when the timing is right.
Can my accountant get the numbers?
Yes — there are over 50 reports in the back office, and any of them can be scheduled to email your accountant, bookkeeper or manager daily or weekly. If your accountant introduced you to us, they can stay as close to the numbers as you want them to be.
